Photos of the Day - Check out the Hardbody on Bodysport

isaac | photo shoot, misc, photos, photo of the day | Wednesday, 23 July 2008

One of the best photographers in the biz proves why he is on top with his latest set of images. Terry Goodlad is able to bring out the best in every model and he’s proving it again this month. The newest issue of FLEX features fitness icon Monica Brant in some of the best photos of seen of her in recent years. Check out the gallery on bodysport.com with IFBB pro Melissa Pearo, hands down the best photos I’ve seen of her. This is proof that shooting with a talented photographer does nothing but up your stock in the fitness industry.

Shelley Hillesheim - “No rest for the fitness obsessed”

isaac | interviews, NPC USA | Wednesday, 23 July 2008

Shelley Hillesheim has found success on the NPC figure stage and isn’t about to look back now. She’s notched another win in her belt by taking top honors in her class at the Master’s Nationals. This mother of two proves that you can accomplish anything you set out to do. She’s an attractive lass who has her sights set on this weekend’s USA Figure Championships. I caught up with Shelly days before leaving for Sin City.

How did it feel to win your class at your first national show?
It felt AMAZING to win my class at my very first national show! Part of my ‘mental game’ for competing is to walk into a show believing that I will win, so I had set an expectation for myself going in. It is always nice to actually fulfill that expectation (and hope). By the way, winning two overall championship titles at a local level in each of the two months prior definitely increased my confidence level going into nationals.

You’re a mom, right? How challenging is it to compete with kids?
Yes, I am a mom. I have two kids - a 5 yr old boy and a 3 yr old girl. It can feel incredibly challenging to juggle the day-to-day family needs with the demands of a serious figure competitor. However, as I better learn to incorporate more of those demands into my life as a true ‘lifestyle’, it feels more balanced and natural. The family is getting used to me exercising a certain number of hours a day and eating foods that they don’t eat. It seems more normal as I continue to compete. It is becoming who I am.

What are your goals for USAs?
Primary goal - win my class and go pro!
Ancillary goal(s) - make viable contacts in the industry to gain exposure for fitness modeling and potential sponsorship opportunities. I’ll be ready at hand with my new comp cards.

Shelley looking to make an impact in Vegas.

How difficult has it been to do as many shows as you have done and continue to have success?
I did my first show this year in May. I’ve done one about every four weeks since. In July, I’m doing two shows back-to-back (one weekend after another). I also have my sights set on another show in September. It has actually proved to be a good pace for me. It’s keeping me focused and on track. Plus, I am sure that winning is helping with continued motivation and momentum. As the saying goes, “success breeds success.” This is true for me.

What words of encouragement do you have for other “masters” women thinking of competing but afraid to do so?
It doesn’t matter your age …know what you want, why you are doing it and do whatever it takes to get it, even when it hurts. My trainer told me early in my time with her that ‘every day counts.’ In this sport, I believe that to be completely true. Everyone trains and competes for different reasons. Simply know YOUR reasons and maintain focus on that reason. Every day that you ponder if you should compete, you are wasting a day of training.

Thanks Shelley and best wishes in Vegas!

The ladies show is loading up with competitors for the 2008 Europa Super Show. The event will take place on August 15-16, 2008 in Dallas, Texas. There are a number of the same competitors in the fitness event that competed earlier in Houston. Will Moe and Shemp… errr Tracey Greenwood and Shannon Meteraud be back to battle it out? NPC USA PREVIEW

isaac | misc, NPC USAs | Tuesday, 22 July 2008

Click on over to my preview of this weekend’s NPC USA contest. Promoter Jon Lindsay promised me a six pack of Diet Coke here on hardbody and I’ll need it! This is going to be one hot show. Please note if I didn’t mention your name, it’s nothing personal. I know one competitor I totally spaced when writing the preview is Michelle Anderson. She took fourth in her class at Jr. USAs and I look for her to be in the top call-outs at this show. My dark horse in this show is Kristin Nunn, watch out for her as she has a physique that is off the chain. The C Class looks to be the toughest line-up of the whole show. Whoever wins that could go on to win the overall. There are also a number of women who did very well last weekend at the Masters and could shake things up at this show, like Ann Pratt.

Check out my entire preview here.

The Joy of Fred - Design Brilliance

isaac | misc | Tuesday, 22 July 2008

I ran across Fred’s site today and it stood out for it’s clever simplicity. As a designer at heart, I appreciate things that are well designed and more often than not, less is more. Check out the website “Worldwide Fred”. They have some of the coolest little gadgets I’ve ever seen. Below are a few of my favorites from their site.

shapeup_648.jpg

SHAPE UP!™ wake up with a workout
This dumbbell-style alarm wants to start your day off right! Just set the alarm and in the morning it will buzz until you’ve done 30 reps. Annoying? Maybe. Effective? Unquestionably! Shape Up! is the perfect gift for sleepy-heads. Individual recyclable clear boxes.

toastednotes_648.jpg

TOASTED NOTES™ the hot buttered desk accessory!
This piping hot slice of toast is pretty hard to miss on your desktop, so you’ll always be able to put your fingers on a buttery little self-stick note when you need one. Old Fred really wanted to call it “toast-it notes” but he just doesn’t want to deal with another lawyer. Whatever happened to America’s sense of humor? Toasted Notes comes with 5 handy pads in each peggable clamshell.

saltandpeeper_648.jpg

SALT & PEEPER™ a bird in the hand
This little peeper just wants to please. Turn his head to the right — his eyes change from blue to white and his beak dispenses salt; turn it left — his eyes turn black and of course his beak pours the pepper. Peggable recyclable clear boxes.

You can find out where to purchase these items and more on their site. There’s a ton more that is worth checking out. Design Brilliance at it’s finest.

Five Red Flags to Keep in Mind

isaac | misc | Tuesday, 22 July 2008

It happens all the time and in every industry. Someone wants to sound more important and relevant then they really are. In the fitness industry it is no different and I’ve been hearing/seeing it become more prevelant. It tends to happen around bigger shows like this weekend’s USA contest, where many false promises and guarantees are thrown around. Here are five red flags to not only keep an eye out for this weekend but also at any time.

RED FLAG #1 - Print Promises
If someone promises you they can get you in a magazine, they are lying. Unless they are the editor of the magazine no one can promise you they will get you published. Huge red flag if someone promises you to get you in print. They can say they will try and can pitch you to a mag but even those with regular columns have their work editing. Their is never a guarantee when it comes to getting published. If someone says they are shooting a cover for a major magazine, they are usually full of it. The magazines more often than not have staff or contracted photographers who do their covers. Some magazines (the lesser circulated ones) will put spec work on covers but if it’s for Oxygen, Muscle and Fitness Hers, Flex, Muscle and Fitness, Inside Fitness, Muscle Mag… chances are you’ve heard of the photographer. Don’t be fooled into thinking Joe Schmoe No Name is going to put you on the cover of a legit magazine when you’ve never seen their work published in the mag before.

RED FLAG #2 - Wannabe “Gurus” / Trainers
Just because you work with a specific trainer doesn’t entitle you to a top placing. Many women will work with specific trainers with the sole intent of thinking it will place them higher. You still need to do the work. On the flip side, be very weary of trainers who want to take credit for competitor’s success. A good trainer will encourage you and may tell others they worked with you however if someone is writing that they are on your team and you didn’t agree to it, red flag. If someone is telling others that without you, you wouldn’t have done well, red flag. You may have gotten there a little quicker with the right guidance but you still did the work. If some one is telling others that they trained you when you did well but they aren’t when you didn’t place well, red flag. There are many wannabe “gurus” and they will latch onto a competitor’s success with the intent of being more relevant in the industry. Talk with competitors who have worked with the trainer both present and past before agreeing to be on any “Team”. Just because a pro or a big name person recommends them doesn’t mean they are great either.

RED FLAG #3 - Not all people who carry big lenses are good photographers
Don’t be fooled this weekend or at any show by guys or girls carrying around cameras with big lenses. The size of the lense doesn’t equate to the quality of the photos. I’ve seen a creative person take better shots with a camera phone then someone sporting a big fancy schmancy camera. Don’t agree to shoot with someone on the spot unless you know who they are, seen their work or were recommended by a close friend who you trust. There will be many people shooting competitors this weekend and many are legit in the industry however some are not. Trust your gut and don’t do anything you’re not comfortable doing. It’s easier to say no, then to regret something and have to deal with it later.

RED FLAG #4 - Name Droppers
If someone is telling you how they photographed this top pro or this top model, be cautious. Most good photographers don’t need to name drop. If you ask them who they’ve shot and they tell you that is different then them approaching you and trying to be super fly with their roster. Just because someone shot a top pro or a model you may admire, doesn’t make them legit. There are plenty of women who regret shooting with a photographer for one reason or another. Some people will try to have credibility by dropping names but again be weary if that is one of the first things out of their mouths.

RED FLAG #5 - Bashers
If someone only bashes people and never has anything positive to say about others, red flag. This is a very image driven industry and many times people place their self worth into their placings or what others think of them. That doesn’t mean you should always be negative or complain. There are plenty of positives and great things about the industry. Watch out for the bashers, they will only bring you down. Watch out for competitors who only bitch about other competitors, their trainers, “politics” or pass blame. Sure shit happens and there is always something we could all complain about however if that is what you constantly hear, red flag. If you ask someone their opinion and it’s not what you want to hear that’s not always being negative. You all know the people I am talking about. You typically see them come out after a show when they didn’t win. It’s not just competitors - it’s photographers, trainers, boyfriends, husbands, family, friends, etc. Watch out for anyone who bashes more then they are positive with their words.

If you have any red flags you’ve experienced and like to share with the readers, post ‘em up in the comments field below.

If you haven’t made the trip out to Red Rocks, I’d encourage you to do so. Go early in the morning or you may melt away.

Jamie Costa puts the NPC USA Figure A Class on Warning

isaac | NPC shows, photo shoot, photos, NPC USA | Saturday, 19 July 2008

Okay so maybe she isn’t but I am. Jamie Costa won the NPC figure A Class at the NPC Jr. USAs earlier this year and looked great. It was the first time I had met Jamie but had seen her compete at the USAs last year. I’ve seen Jamie streamline her physique in one year and it’s nothing short of amazing. She’s not only an attractive up-and-coming model but also fits the bill for doing well on stage.

I caught up with Jamie last night for a shoot one week out from the NPC USAs and she’s definitely bringing her A game. She’s streamlined her physique even more since Charleston with her legs coming down in size. At 5′0″ and currently weighing 98lbs, you will see a whole new Jamie next week.

Former Fitness Champ Kelly Ryan’s Prison Sentencing Delayed

isaac | Industry News, misc | Thursday, 17 July 2008

It’s been years since Kelly Ryan was on a competitive fitness stage and she’s spent the last 2.5 years in a Clark County jail cell. Kelly and her husband Craig Titus avoided a trial last month by taking guilty pleas to lesser charges. The two were to be sentenced tomorrow at 8:30 am, however the sentencing has been pushed back to August 22, 2008. If you missed the story and have a few hours on your hands to catch up, you can read all about the ongoing story at www.titusandryan.com.

I’m hearing rumors that Kelly will receive some where in the area of 3-5 years plus time served for her sentence. What will the former fitness champ do when she’s out?

Is Australia overreacting to 10 Year Competitor?

isaac | News, misc | Thursday, 17 July 2008

The Aussie newspapers are asking why the parents aren’t being arrested and causing concern over a 10 year old competing at a bodybuilding show. Reading the Australian online stories you’d swear the little girl was being exploited and living out her parent’s dream, at least that’s how some are trying to paint the picture. According to her the little girl and her parents she entered the competition to have fun after watching bodybuilding shows. Where’s the harm in that? Well, it’s an ongoing question of how young is too young for a competitor to be on stage.

10yearoldl.jpg
Australian competitor performing her routine.

One newspaper (The Herald Sun) interviewed the girl and she told them, “I wasn’t nervous. I just jumped around and was just so excited”.

The article went on to say that child pyschologist Michael Carr-Gregg thought the girl was too young to be “flaunting her body and it could send out the wrong message to image-conscious kids.”

“The thing that concerns me is that young people can damage themselves quite badly if they over-exercise when young,” he said.

“What we should be saying to kids is they should be valued more for what they do than how they look.”

Others think the whole thing is being blown out of proportion and that we should encourage young kids to get off their butts and away from the computer to do something active. IFBB Pro Bodybuilder Lee Priest recently moved back to Australia and had this to say on a bodybuilding message board regarding the topic, “She didn’t diet…They are just down the road from where I live…She is a young active girl with good genetics…Has a great little shape without dieting…She competed in the fitness part and did a little bit of bodybuilding routine as her father use to do it…They are making a big deal of it saying it’s wrong…What’s the difference from that or kids playing any other sport or doing gymnastics etc…At least she is staying healthy and today where kids are so fat why is it bad? If she loves it go for it I say…She doesn’t do weights just more gymnastic style of training….”

0614957200.jpg
10-year old Aussie appears to be having fun.

IFBB Pro Carla Sanchez holds an annual event which has a Jr. Fitness category. Having seen the show myself the girls who compete in this type of event have fun and it promotes healthy eating. The girls are dieting or doing anything crazy with their diets, they are simply having fun and being active. I wasn’t at the show where the girl from Australia competed in but from the sounds of things she was doing much the same and just having fun.

Many times message boards get a bad rap for fostering negativity, especially in the fitness, figure and bodybuilding world. Message boards are often filled with gimmick accounts looking to bash on anyone and everyone or ruin valid discussions. I visit a number of forums for photography, design, MMA and other niches. There always seems to be a few people who post more often then others for whatever reason. I do agree that the message boards in our industry tend to lean on the more negative side of things then other industries. That is until recently. A few months ago, a board called “sioux country” has started to flourish. What the name means and what it has to do with fitness? I haven’t a clue. Who runs the board? Again I haven’t the slightest idea. Honestly, I don’t care who the guy is or need to know his name or see his face because he’s created a positive environment that fosters something refreshing to the fitness industry. The board continues to grow leaps and bounds every week with it’s members. You’ll find a variety of top pros and amateurs interacting with the fans. It’s great to see a friendly environment dedicated to the women of the sport where bashing and malicious attacks are not tolerated.

Women if you’re curious about all the happenings in the industry and too busy to visit a ton of sites (except for hard body of course), I recommend bookmarking the web site, siouxcountry.com. It’s worth checking out and rest assured you won’t be attack or belittled there. Props to the mysterious country of sioux for his dedication to the women’s side of the industry.

Fredericia Brant follows her dreams

isaac | NPC Show, interviews, NPC Masters Nationals | Wednesday, 16 July 2008

Hailing out of Boynton Beach, Florida, Fredericia (Freddi) Brant has her sights set on this weekend’s competition. Freddi will be traveling to Pittsburgh to compete in the Master’s Figure Nationals contest. She’s looking for nothing less than the overall title this time around. I caught up with Freddi days before the show.

What do you do in Florida besides workout?
I have a Law Degree and used that degree to go into and own various businesses. I have a business selling Medical Equipment called Brant Mohawk, LLC. Because I am 50% American Indian and a woman I focus on government contracts. I am also working on a program starting in the New Year called “The Champion in Me” that will help others achieve their success with a mind, body, spirit transformation. My fiance and I just opened a tanning salon in Boynton Beach called, “The Boca Tanning Club”.

Oh is that all? LOL. That’s awesome.

How did you get your start in figure competitions?
I went through a divorce and moved from Ohio to Florida and wanted to focus on something that was not relationship oriented that would take up my extra time and focus. I started working out at the local gym, in Boynton Beach and found a trainer and a diet coach. I picked a date that would give me about 5 months to prepare and turned up the heat. I won the overall in November of 2005, at my very first show, called the All South. What a thrill!

How many NPC shows have you competed in?
Since that time, I have been in 6 NPC shows, excluding my first show. I placed as well as top five in the North American in 06 and last year placed a disappointing 9th, at the North American. I felt that I needed to change my physique and my posing, I knew I could do better. What I needed was a coach and someone who could help me pose. I approached Paola Almerico and Kim Oddo who have both changed my entire look. Kim Oddo is my coach and Paola has been so helpful in showing me how to show my body on stage. I can’t wait to show my new look in Pittsburgh.

What is your goal for Masters Figure Nationals?
I have only one goal for the Masters Nationals…to follow my dream and win the overall.

What advice do you have to other women who think they are too old to compete?
You can never put an age limit on goals and dreams! A woman who is older and worried about competing should not defeat herself in her own mind. She should be realistic in her goals, set her mind to be a champion, train smart and go for it!

Thanks Freddie and all the best this weekend at the show.
